 **Tips for constructing questions**

When designing questions, instructors may want to keep a few tips in mind:

 · Simple, straightforward questions are easier for students to respond to, and responses are generally easier for instructors to interpret.

 · Rating scales should be constructed so that the lowest score (1) represents the lowest/most negative rating (e.g., strongly disagree) and the highest score (5) represents the highest/most positive rating (e.g., strongly agree).

 · Questions that focus on the student’s individual perspective, rather than their perception of the whole class, tend to yield more accurate, specific responses (e.g., “the instructor presented information at an appropriate pace” is vague, relative to “the instructor presented information that I could follow”).
